Snowed In

The roads are icy, the driving, always a bit dicey

The snowfalls in waves, conjuring memories of my home near the ocean side.

The lake now carries, near the shoreline, sheets of ice.

Frozen plants line the shoreline inches deep; they hold the plant in time.

Snow blankets the earth, some how quieting the world outside

The smell of smoke permeates the air from the nearby houses.

I imagine what it is like, you know,

Inside one of these houses.

Are they huddled by the fire, eating supper?

Or are the children in bed- lulled to sleep by the distant hum of the television?

Meanwhile, the lake has disappeared in the nighttime darkness

Blackness invades the windows; the lake, now, a mere dream.

Tomorrow, the lake will again feed the clouds

Rising just like fire, miles of distinctly patterned steam rising.

Each day brings a new challenge, but I

I am stranded, books my friends, the occasion cell phone call from old mates

I reach out for a safe place, a place to call my own

And as the snow melts, the world opens again, and I can see beyond.

Not now, but someday

I will go beyond.

feeling small today,

unable to act, only to feel

grandmother, my Nana

slipping slowly away to.. where..?

(I wish I could have faith)

Unknowing matriarch, memories

Lost, crashing with irretrievable data

What with your passing, will we unknowingly

Lose precious family voices

Only you could render.

Which part of my life has mirrored yours?

Are the innuendos correct?

Are you my true mother of character?

If so, I have been, again

Prejudged

Boxed and neatly labeled,

Filed away in the family safe.

Do you feel as I do now?

I will honor you, grandmother,

Clearing my ears of the tales

spun around your name.

Basque Language Schools, Euskara Not The Impossible Archaic Language Some Portray It To Be

DONOSTIA-. Euskal Herri guztiko 101 ikastolatako 350 ordezkarik aho batez onartu dute “Ikastolak orain eta gero” txostena, Donostiako Miramon Teknologia Parkean egindako VI. Batzarrean.Txostenak biltzen dituen lau gai handiak, ikastola-eredua, Euskal Curriculuma, antolaketa kolektiboa eta plan estrategikoa, onetsi dituzte.Donostiako saioa, irailaren 27an Hendaian egindakoaren jarraipena izan da. Orduan aurkeztu zuten etorkizuna markatzeko, eztabaidatzeko eta adosteko txostena eta denbora honetan bertako ideiak aztertzen eta zuzenketak egiten aritu dira. Horiek jaso eta azken proposamen ofiziala aurkeztu dute, gaur onetsi dena, hain zuzen ere.Ikastolako eredua ikertuz, garatuz eta berrituz, 2020.urterako proiektua osatu dute. Epe luzeko lan honetan, bi elementu bereizi dituzte: alde batetik, Euskal Curriculuma; eta bestetik, egin nahi dutenaren antolaketa, planteamendu ideologikoarekin koherentea izan behar duena.Arlo honetan urrats kualitatibo bat emateko beharra ikusi dute, gaurko funtzionamendua hobetzeko; errazagoa eta eraginkorragoa izateko, ikastolatik hurbilago aritzeko eta parte hartze zuzenagoa ahalbidetzeko. Erakunde argia nahi dute, aintzindaria eta buru bakarrekoa. Honen harira, ikastola guztiak bazkidetuko dituen Europar Kooperatiba berria dutela nabarmendu zuten. “Hezkuntza zerbitzuak, ekonomia zerbitzuak, etab. erakunde bakar batean bateratuko dira eta ondorioz eraginkorragoak izatea espero dugu”, azaldu dute.Baina, oraindik urrun geratzen da 2020 eta bitartean pausoz pauso ibili beharra dago. Plan Integralaren bidez, hemendik bost urtetarako helmuga jarri dute.”Etapa luze bat bukatu da, sortze unetik gaurdainokoa. Ikastolak sortu, hazi eta garatu dira eta gaurkoarekin baditugu tresnak etapa luze bati ekitzeko”, baieztatu dute. Aro berri honen adierazleetako bat gertatzen ari den belaunaldi aldaketa da, bai familietan eta baita profesionalen eremuan ere. Datu bat aipatzearren, bost-sei urte barru egongo diren irakasleen %60k ez dute prozesu historiko hau bizitua izango.Euskal nortasunari buruz, azaldu dute etorkizuneko eta gaurko belaunaldiak ez direla soilik euskaldun; gutxienez hiru hizkuntzaren jabe dira.
